COLORADO SPRINGS -

Hundreds of volunteers were hard at work today dishing up nearly one thousand meals for the Springs Rescue Mission's annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner. While the charity is known for their homeless outreach work in the city, this dinner at the Colorado Springs City Auditorium was open to everyone.

Executives at the rescue mission say having people volunteer as servers and greet guests with a smile helps to restore a sense of dignity for people struggling with poverty.

"Hope starts often with a meal," said Travis Williams, Vice President of Advancement for the Springs Rescue Mission. "The only way that we've been able to do this is with thousands of people in Southern Colorado who've donated to be able to provide what's happening today."

Individuals and families who attended also received winter coats, hats, and gloves.
