Heading home for the holiday? Expect a busy travel day ahead

Posted: Updated:
COLORADO SPRINGS -

It's the busiest travel day of the year, so if you're hitting the road or the skies make sure you give yourself some extra time!

This Thanksgiving travel period is the busiest in over 10 years. According to AAA Colorado, over 850,000 Coloradans will travel 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving.

Plus, expect fuller skies this year! Nearly 60,000 Coloradans plan on flying for the holiday, and that could be because airfare is the cheapest it's been in 5 years.

At the Colorado Springs Airport, they've added more employees for valet parking and shuttle buses to prepare for the crowds, but you still need to get there early!

"We always recommend that they come in 2 hours prior to departure just to have enough time to park, find a spot, check in, go through our TSA line and just have a relaxing time in the terminal and be ready to catch their plane," said Public Communications Specialist for the Colorado Springs Airport Sydney Kozel.

Expect some traffic if you're hitting the roads! Almost 90% of Colorado travelers are planning a road trip and expect to pay a pretty penny! Gas prices are up 47 cents per gallon since last holiday season.

If you're flying out of DIA you'll want to give yourself even more drive time. The busiest hours to make the trip to Denver will be today from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
