5 Games to watch in Week Two of the Playoffs

Posted: Updated:

DO OR DIE TIME: As the playoffs enter the second week of the season (3rd for 2A/1A/8man) the pressure to perform is even higher than before.

With Fountain-Fort Carson losing 35-14 to Eaglecrest in 5A, that class has wrapped up for us in Southern Colorado.

These are the five games to watch for week two of the playoffs.

State Championship
Peetz 38, Liberty (Joes)/Stratton 28
Sedgwick County 41, Holly 8
West Grand 38, Soroco 28
Class 1A
Centauri 20, Limon 12
Strasburg 41, Bennett 34
Class 2A
Bayfield 21, Resurrection Christian 0
La Junta 42, Eaton 0
Class 3A
Erie 35, Durango 28
Longmont 30, Mead 26
Palisade 17, Roosevelt 14
Palmer Ridge 49, Rifle 7
Class 4A
Broomfield 28, Loveland 27
Pueblo South 35, Vista Ridge 14
Pueblo West 24, Chatfield 21
Class 5A

Eaglecrest 26, Cherry Creek 7

2A #4 LA JUNTA at #8 EATON: With the Tigers defeat of TCA, they are one step closer to a return to the 2A title game to defend. Their path becomes a little easier with Eaton upsetting #1 Platte Valley last weekend but if the Reds were good enough to beat the top team in the bracket, then maybe it's not so easy?

3A #2 PALMER RIDGE vs. #10 RIFLE: Until CHSAA changes the rule, Palmer Ridge has to go on the road to keep their title hopes alive, despite being the second seed in 3A and 11-0. The Bears took care of business against Berthoud last week at home to advance to the quarterfinals. Anytime a Southern Colorado team goes to the Western Slope, it's becomes tougher for them to achieve their dreams. Fortunately the Bears take arguably the best offense in the class with them ans quarterback Ty Evans, averaging 275 yards a game and the team eclipsed 500 points on the season.

4A #8 RAMPART vs. #1 PINE CREEK: The shortest "road game" for the Rams this season will be against the top team in the class and the defending champ. This game will be every bit of the grudge match that I'm hoping it will be: same district, same neighborhoods, same kids - this will be neighborhood divided for many in Colorado Springs. This game on paper sets up very simply: Can either team handle the quickness and speed on the other team? Keion Cross has made a highlight reel of making other defenders miss badly this season and David Moore has done the same, mostly with power. Expect a low scoring grudge match and I can't wait for it.

4A #6 PUEBLO SOUTH  vs. #13 VISTA RIDGE: Not many had the Wolves advancing past the first round, everyone except the Wolves themselves. They scored on the first five possessions in a 39-25 win vs. #3 Fruita Monument. The task goes up a notch this week vs. Pueblo South, a team many think is the best in the state. Vista Ridge will get a boost by hosting the Colts on Saturday afternoon. Expect this one to be a high scoring shootout as the Colts flex their offensive muscle with Marcel Barbee, Thomas Pannunzio and Steve Brock. But our Athlete of the Week Jaylen Thomas will have his say in the game. Get there early on Saturday.

4A #5 CHATFIELD vs. #4 PUEBLO WEST: The Cyclones are one step closer to their second state football title in 10 years but it's going to be hard to get to the next level vs. Chatfield. The Denver-area powerhouse is just that - a powerhouse. An old school running team with ten rushers averaging double digits and senior Ben Frenette, who averages 141 a game. That Cyclone defense will need to be at their best, as will their own running back Pierre Taylor. He's averages 145 a game on the ground but their X-Factor? Nyeme Smyer-Williams. He's caught eight touchdowns this season and returned three kick offs for scores. P. West will need a full three element game plan to take down the Chargers and advance to the semi-finals.
