Nate Solder returns to Southern Colorado with Patriots

Posted: Updated:

A familiar face is back in Southern Colorado with the New England Patriots.

Buena Vista native Nate Solder returned to his roots as the Pats began practice at the Air Force Academy this week.

The seven year NFL veteran grew up playing for the Demons before taking a scholarship to the University of Colorado.

He said he really enjoyed seeing old friends on Tuesday, the team's day off, and being at the Academy jogged some old memories of his recruitment.

"I was actually recruited by (former Air Force head coach) Fisher DeBerry when he was here and I would have loved to have come here," Solder said. "I don't know if I had the discipline to make it through (laughs) but I really respected this place."

Solder said his parents split their time between North Carolina and Leadville.

The Patriots met the Patriots this week at the Air Force Academy.

In the midst of their time in Colorado Springs, the New England Patriots got to spend some time observing life as a USAFA cadet, an experience the players didn't take for granted.

"Talked to the head coach (Troy Calhoun) and how he welcomed us - it's been a great experience," said safety Duron Harmon. "We've been very, very appreciative for them letting us use the facilities."

"Just shows how strong they are and shows what type of person it takes to make it here in the Air Force Academy," said Rob Gronkowski. "Which takes a lot of dedication, for sure."
