There is a new view beyond the decades old, street closed barricades at Centennial Boulevard and Fillmore on the west side of Colorado Springs. The area has been on the books as a planned extension for some 30 years—over the past couple of days construction crews have started moving forward with work..
Planning maps show Centennial going from Fillmore and creating a connection to Interstate 25 at the Fontanero interchange. “Fontanero is currently an underused exit off of I-25, but it was originally designed and planned for the road connection,” said City of Colorado Springs, Senior Engineer, Aaron Egbert.
The first of two phase is the work that started just recently. It connects Centennial down to neighborhoods along Van Buren Street. There is also utility and demolition work included. It will take until the end of May 2018.
Phase two is more extensive and still has some unknowns. There are some old undocumented dump sites mostly on private property that extend into the road right of way. A deal to take care of the buried debris is in the works with the land owner. "We're working on an agreement with the developer to perform that work for us as they clean-up their own site," said Egbert.
Because of deals still in the works, project planners are being careful about giving an estimated time for total completion. It will be several year of work.
