Veterans honored across Southern Colorado

PUEBLO -

Our cameras had the chance to capture several Veteran's Day celebrations Saturday morning.

In Pueblo, it was no surprise the "Home of Heroes" put on an impressive show of both pride and patriotism.

The celebration starting in downtown Pueblo with a parade, followed by a ceremony beneath the Veterans Bridge.

"[I] served 12 years, over four years of combat, so I want to make sure I'm showing support to the people who supported me," said veteran Gabriel Ballejos.

During the ceremony, Colonel Christopher Grace--Commander of the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot, was one of many speakers who addressed the crowd.

The American Legion Post 2 hosted a lunch event afterward.

And in Palmer Lake, dozens turned out for a special ceremony, dedicating the William J. Crawford Memorial site.

Crawford served in World War II, and was a Medal of Honor recipient

Crawford's daughter, Beverly Kite, and several other family members attended the ceremony.

"It's what we need in our country--a revival of a spirit of patriotism and community," said Ed Kite, Crawford's son-in-law.

Construction on the site began this past summer.

The memorial resembles the U.S. Army Medal of Honor star.

The 4-foot by 4-foot patch of grass right at the end of Kevin Sabata's driveway has been a constant thorn in his side. It's bordered on three sides by concrete or asphalt. There's hardly any shade because the trees in his Wildwood Ridge subdivision are little more than saplings.  Despite all his efforts, Kevin just couldn't get the grass to grow.  "It just was not coming back," he said.
