Veterans Day events and deals around town this weekend

Although the Veteran's Day parade in Colorado Springs was held last weekend, this weekend is dedicated to honor and remember those who have served in our United States Armed Forces.

But for those of you who missed the parade, there are few events around town in honor of our military veterans. 

Friday:

In case you missed it, a Veteran's Day Recital was held at the Colorado Springs Senior Center at the YMCA at 1514 North Hancock Ave Friday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Where children ages six to 16 performed patriotic music in honor of veterans and their families. 

Saturday:

The 'Veterans Day Celebration - A Salute to Service' will be at the Aeroplaza Stake Building at 1310 Aeroplaza Drive in Colorado Springs. The event is on Veteran's Day Saturday Nov 11, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The celebration of veterans will feature the Colorado Mormon Chorale and Orchestra. 

"Pueblo's Salute to the Spirit of our Veterans" parade will take place on Saturday in observance of Veterans Day. The 16th annual Pueblo Chieftain Veterans Day Parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. starting on Union Ave and B Street in Pueblo. The parade will then end on Third Street, with a ceremony afterwards.

After the parade at 11:30 a.m. the Pueblo Veterans Day Ceremony will begin in the area beneath  the Veterans Bridge on the Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo. There will be guest speakers, Vietnam Veterans, and more at the ceremony. 

Military Weekend at the Pueblo Zoo will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Pueblo Zoo. Free admission is being offered for all military and their family, military ID's or proof of service is required. Saturday hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday from noon to 4:00 p.m.

The William J. Crawford Memorial Site Dedication at Palmer Lake will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday to honor WWII Medal of Honor recipient. Speaker Bob McLaughlin will speak on behalf of Mr. Crawford and his family, as his daughter will be present at the dedication. 

Starbucks is hosting a special event in only 10 Starbucks locations across the country, including the Colorado Springs Military Family Store. This is a pop-up-style workshop presenting the "15 Things Veterans Want you To Know." The goal of the event is to educate and influence the civilian understanding of military culture. The Starbucks is located at 735 Cheyenne Mountain Meadows Rd, the event will be from 1:00-3:00 p.m. 

National Park Services are waiving entrance fees for all veterans and their families, all 412 US National Parks, Monuments and Historic sites will offer free parking and entrance fees.

Many local businesses and restaurants will be giving away free items to military service members.

Please call ahead to verify participating locations for these deals: 

  • Starbucks is offering any Veteran, active duty military and military spouses who visit Starbucks on Nov 11 will be treated to a free tall coffee.
  • Boston Market is offering buy one individual meal with a drink and get a second free at all US locations from Nov 10-12. 
  • Applebee's is offering a free meal to military veterans and active duty service members on Veterans Day. There will be eight entrees to choose from.
  • Bar Louie is offering a free flatbread of burger on Saturday.
  • Black Angus Steakhouse is offering Veterans and active military members a certified Angus Beef Top Sirloin Steak, served with mashed potatoes, broccoli with garlic butter and Sweet Molasses Bread. Offer ONLY valid on Nov 11 from open to 3:00 p.m.
  • Bubba's is offering a free meal (can choose one of six entrees) to all veterans including active, retired or former military from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 
  • California Pizza Kitchen is offering a choice between a pizza, full size salad, or pasta from the special Veterans Day Menu. Dine in only, please come in uniform or bring ID.
  • Cracker Barrel is offering a complimentary slice of Double Chocolate Fudge Coca-Cola Cake.
  • Famous Daves is offering a free 2 meat combo served with any choice of salad and corn bread muffin for military members and Veterans. Bring proof of service or ID. 
  • Friendly's is offering a free big-two-do breakfast or all American Burger during lunch or dinner. Dine-in only, limited to one person. offer available for active military and veterans. Must bring proof of ID or discharge papers.
  • Great Clips is offering a free haircut, or a coupon to use at a later date for active military members and veterans. 
  • Little Caesar's is offering free pizza or $5 Hot-N-Ready lunch combo to all US Armed Forces veterans and active military members from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Proof of military service is required.
  • Mimi's Cafe is offering Veterans or active duty can select a free item from a special menu. Proof of service is required. 
  • On the Border is offering a Veterans Day special where Veterans and current service members will receive a free choose 2 or 3 "create your own combo". Proof of service is required.
  • Outback Steakhouse is offering a free Bloomin' Onion and non alcoholic beverage to active duty and Veterans. ID or proof of service is required.
  • Red Lobster is offering a free appetizer or dessert with military ID or proof of service.
  • Red Robin is offering a free Red's Tavern Double and Bottomless Steak Fries for all guests with a military ID or proof of service.
  • Romano's Macaroni Grill is offering a free Mom's Ricotta Meatballs and Spaghetti entree for current and former military.
  • Ruby Tuesday's is offering a free appetizer (up to $10), proof of service required.
  • Speedy Shine Car Express is offering free washes to all veterans, proof of service required.
  • Texas Roadhouse is offering a free meal from a special menu, including sides and a soft drink. Proof of service is required, dine-in only.
  • T.G.I.Friday's is offering a free lunch menu item up to $12 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for current military and Veterans. Military ID or proof of service required, dine-in only.
  • Village Inn is offering a free INN-credible VIB breakfast for Veterans and active duty military. This is only valid on four select items, call ahead to very participating location.
  • Yo-Yogurt is offering 50% off to Veterans and their families, proof of service required.

    The El Paso County Sheriff's Office Special Victims Unit is looking for victims who were assaulted by a local minister.   An investigation began in May 2017, the suspect was licensed minister 22-year old Romello Leach. Leach was arrested on Nov 22, he was booked into the Criminal Justice Center Jail on multiple felony counts of Sexual Assault on a Child.
