DENVER -

A suspect is in critical condition after an officer involved shooting near Denver's 16th Street Mall.

The shooting happened in the 1500 block of Welton Street in an alley near the intersection with California Friday afternoon. The Mall Ride is shut down on the entire length of the 16th Street Mall due to the investigation.

Denver Police said the suspect targeted the ANB Bank.  After the robbery, an alert citizen flagged down an officer who was walking his usual beat route at the mall and pointed out the robbery suspect. There was a confrontation in the alley and the officer shot the suspect.

At the scene, police found a weapon and money from the bank robbery.

"I will tell you it's a very safe area but unfortunately there are times when incidents will occur and unfortunately this is one of those times. But thanks to the citizen who identified the individual and the quick response by the officer the individual was apprehended." DPD Chief Robert White.

There was only once officer involved in the incident and it is not yet clear if that officer was wearing a body camera.
