Gun fight leads to deaths of men in Simla

Posted: Updated:
SIMLA -

The Elbert County Sheriff's Office said a gun battle lead to the deaths of two men in a home in the 30000 block of Highway 24, west of Simla, near the El Paso, Elbert County line.

Investigators said previously that the home is the site of an illegal marijuana grow operation, and investigators believe the operation is a contributing factor in the deaths of the two men.

They found the body of 30-year-old Luis Suarez shot to death outside of the home. Inside, they found the body of 48-year-old Donn Zorens who was identified as the homeowner. He was also shot.

The call came in around 8 a.m. Thursday as a suspicious death, when deputies arrived they found the bodies.

Sheriff's investigators tell News5 it appears at this time the 31 acre property was being used as in illegal marijuana grow operation. They believe Suarez forced his way into the home and a robbery was taking place at the time of the shootings.

Suarez is suspected of having ties to organized drug crime in both El Paso and Elbert counties.

Anyone with additional information about this is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 303-805-6114.
