Group claims Pueblo has one of the most unhealthiest environments in the state

Posted: Updated:

The Center for Health Progress reports that Pueblo County has one of the unhealthiest physical environments in Colorado. The group hosted a panel discussion Wednesday to talk about how air pollution impacts the health of Pueblo families and where those toxins are coming from.

As we've reported, the EPA has already signed off on a $43 million clean-up plan for hundreds of homes on the Colorado smelter site.

The Center for Health Progress meeting focused more on potential air pollution from Xcel's Comanche coal-fired power plant, and the possibility of switching to renewable energy sources.

News 5 spoke with one man at the meeting who claims poor air quality has led to multiple hospital visits. He hopes the county will start making some big changes.

"Between where they used to put the battery acid, the chemicals produced in that pool, and where they had landfills for the free silica, or asbestos.  It's kind of like the perfect storm for me.  It's a hurricane waiting to happen to my own system.  And I just happen to be someone that's struggling with that", explained Scott Culken.
