Posted: Updated:
CANON CITY -

The St. Thomas More Hospital wants to address the number of people that are diabetic and prediabetic in the state. According to the hospital 410,000 people have diabetes in Colorado, and 1.5 million have prediabetes.

This is in a continuing effort to educate the public on this epidemic, St. Thomas More Hospital will host their annual management seminar on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The theme of the event is "The heart of Diabetes" and will feature keynote speaker, cardiologist Dr. David Albrecht.

Dr. Albrecht will address cardiac health in relation to diabetes and what those with diabetes can do to improve their heart health. The free event offers education on diabetic services, meal prep, fitness and nutrition.

Breakfast will be served as the hospital's chef Rachael Swett, demonstrates healthy cooking techniques and nutritious food options. The event will end with giveaways and a number of door prizes.

“As more people develop diabetes or prediabetes at a younger age, we need to really focus our efforts on controlling and managing diabetes and preventing type 2 diabetes,” says Shannon Minich, certified diabetes educator and program coordinator at STM. “By addressing diabetes, we also address and prevent many other health problems.”

The event is located at 3000 E Main St at the E-Free Church in Canon City, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14.

If you have diabetes, provide care for someone with diabetes or are interested in healthy living, join STM for an educational journey through diabetes management and heart health. Please RSVP by calling 719-285-2712.
