Two hospitalized from the flu in Pueblo County

Posted: Updated:

The Pueblo City-County Public Health Department confirmed the first hospitalizations from the flu in Pueblo County Tuesday.

The health department said both patients are senior citizens. Health officials said there may be many more cases of flu in the area that haven't been confirmed by the health department, due to how it confirms cases.

"The health department is only able to confirm hospitalizations so this could be the tip of the iceberg." Public Information Officer Sarah Joseph said.

The health department stresses it's important to get vaccinated soon, before the worst part of the flu season arrives.

“Now is a good time to get the flu vaccine as the vaccine takes about two weeks for protection to set in,” said Jody Carrillo, division director at the Pueblo City-County Health Department.

Vaccines are available to people who don't have health insurance through the health department. Appointments can be made by calling 719-583-4380.

Symptoms of the flu start suddenly and may include the following:

  • Fever (usually high)
  • Headache
  • Tiredness (can be extreme)
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Body aches
  • Chills and fatigue
  • Vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children)

According to the health department, people with health problems, the elderly or babies younger the six months old to avoid public events and crowds to decrease exposure to the virus.

Officials with the health department also said people who get the flu should stay home until 24 hours after your fever is gone without the help of fever reducing medicine.

Pueblo County recorded its highest number of hospitalizations from the flu in the last five years with 173 confirmed cases, that was 141 more cases than the lowest number of cases recorded over that five year span.
