Army completes sweep of Air Force with 2-0 win

Posted: Updated:

Army goaltender Cole Bruns made 29 saves to lead the Black Knights to a 2-0 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey Conference game Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Academy’s Cadet Ice Arena.

Neither team was able to score in the first period, but the Black Knights (5-3-0 overall and 5-3-0 in the league) had the best scoring chance. Army junior Trevor Fidler had a clean breakaway that was saved by Billy Christopoulos.

Midway through the second period, Army cashed in on the power play. Tyler Pham and Dalton MacAfee played catch out front as the Black Knights got set up. MacAfee fed Alex Wilkinson at the left dot and his slap shot put the Black Knights up 1-0 at 12:19.

Late in the third, Army added an insurance goal. Bruns swept the puck into the corner and MacAfee chipped the puck high off the wall. Andrle skated down the right wing and scored his first of the season at 18:36..

Air Force outshot Army, 29-22, in the game. Army was 1-for-2 on the power play while Air Force was 0-for-3. Christopoulos made 20 saves for the Falcons.

“First, I want to say congratulations to the Army football and hockey teams,” head coach Frank Serratore. “They had a great weekend. They were the better and more polished team this weekend. This is a chance for us, with all the injuries, to look at some young guys. We are going to focus on getting better now and then, when our injured guys get back, make a run in the second half. Our guys tried hard tonight. Their goalie was solid and we just didn’t have enough. We’ll go back to work with the guys who are healthy and will put our best foot forward going into Holy Cross next week.

The Falcons (5-4-1, 1-3-0 AHC) travel to Worcester, Mass., for a two-game league series against the Holy Cross Crusaders, Friday-Saturday, Nov. 10-11, at 7:05 pm ET each night.
