Air Force hockey falls to Army 3-2

Posted: Updated:

Army scored two power-play goals in the third period as the Black Knights defeated 19th-ranked Air Force, 3-2, in an Atlantic Hockey Conference game, Friday, Nov. 3, at a sold out Cadet Ice Arena.

Army (4-3-0 overall and 4-3-0 AHC) struck first as Michael Wilson scored unanswered at 8:33. Wilson collected a loose puck in his own end, skated into the Falcon zone and snapped a wrister from the left circle.

Air Force (5-3-1 overall and 1-2-0 AHC) tied the game early in the third period. Erik Baskin, who came out from behind the net, slid the puck through the slot and Evan Giesler scored on the back door at 2:25. Dylan Abood also assisted on Giesler’s first of the season. The Black Knights regained the lead on the power play at 5:09 as Dalton MacAfee scored with a slap shot from the point. The Falcons answered again as Matt Serratore scored his fourth of the season at the 11:29 mark. After Brady Tomlak won a faceoff in the offensive, Matt Koch punched it down the wall and Serratore fought off a defender in the right circle. His wrister snuck just under the bar and inside the far post to tie the game at 2-2. Serratore has scored a point in five straight games. Army again answered quickly on the power play. Alex Wilkinson funneled a puck from the center point and Wilson tapped it in from the near post for a 3-2 lead at 13:23.

Air Force outshot Army, 30-16, in the game. Army was 2-for-3 on the power play while Air Force was 0-for-3. Billy Christopoulos made 13 saves while Cole Bruns made 28 for the Black Knights.

“We played hard in the second and third period,” head coach Frank Serratore said. “Due to the number of injuries we have had, we are a completely different team. We had 18 forwards to start the season, and now we have 11. We have to learn how to win with the group we have. That’s not an excuse that we will use though. We need to overcome this adversity. You can’t simulate this kind of adversity. But our  kids never quit, they just keep battling. We will come back hard tomorrow and play with spirit and passion, like we did tonight.”

Air Force and Army conclude the two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 7:35 pm MT at the Cadet Ice Arena.
