Bergdahl Avoids Jail Time

Posted: Updated:
(NBC News) -

Confessed deserter Bowe Bergdahl will not face jail time for walking away from his post in Afghanistan in 2009.

After pleading guilty last month to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, the former Army sergeant received a dishonorable
discharge Friday from a military judge in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Bergdahl faced a possible sentence of life in prison.

The judge gave no explanation for his decision, which also included a reduction in rank from sergeant to private and forfeiture of pay equal to
$1,000 per month for ten months.

The dishonorable discharge triggers an automatic appeal to a higher military court.

His attorneys say they still believe the case should be dismissed, citing comments on the case last year by then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. The president
slammed Friday's decision, tweeting that it was "a complete and total disgrace to our country and to our military."
