Pueblo Ballot Issue 2B asks voters to approve tax hike for more police officers

Posted: Updated:
PUEBLO -

Pueblo Ballot Issue 2B asks voters to approve a tax increase that would pay for the addition of 24 officers to the Pueblo Police Department.  "[We] really need to boost our forces in the police department. It's just we're trying to address this issue with public safety in Pueblo," said Pueblo City Councilman, Chris Nicoll.  Pueblo city leaders say one of the top concerns they hear about from the community is crime.

There was a similar previous ballot question turned down by votes. Nicoll says the ballot issue this time takes a different, more simplified approach. “Last time had other issues included in it. This time it's just a pared down, police only ballot issue."

A yes vote would raise sales tax by one fifth of one percent for five years. That is one cent for every five dollars spent. The ballot language says it will raise $3.6 million annually. It is enough money to hire, train and equip 24 additional police officers.

This is the language for Ballot Issue 2B:
