Staying safe: how one organization is working to combat gang activity

Posted: Updated:

Several years ago, Lisa and Estevan Medina decided they needed to make a life change.

Estevan, a former gang member was in the hospital for a liver disease, he was told he only had a few months to live, he survived.

'I got a second chance,' said Medina, 'with that second chance I wanted just to share my story with kids, about the gangs, you now, about that whole lifestyle.'

Which is why he and his wife, Lisa began the organization 'Second Chance Through Faith,' it's a religious organization that helps at-risk youth and teens get on a different path.

Estevan and Lisa say there have been an increase in young people coming to them for help.

Often times, these younger kids have even gotten a hold of weapons.

'That to me is very devastating because that means that they are in the hands of people that are too young because that means that they can pop off out of anger out of retaliation,' said Lisa Estevan.
