Springs Rescue Mission expects full capacity due to cold weather

Posted: Updated:

Homeless Shelters around Colorado Springs are ready for this week's cold weather. The Springs Rescue Mission says their newly expanded facility means they can help more people in need.

The campus is housing over 270 people right now, but says they have room for over 300. They do anticipate to be full tonight given the freezing temperatures expected throughout the week.

The Springs Rescue Mission reminds the public hypothermia can hit faster than people think, so to be mindful of that.

''Many will maybe take that little bit of a risk for one night. Sometimes we'll find folks come into the shelter late at night, knocking on the door because they've recognized that it is just too cold to be trying to survive on the streets,'' said Travis Williams of the Springs Rescue Mission.

The mission starts check-in at 4:30 p.m. each day, they are a "come as you are" shelter providing two hot meals a day, along with offering kennels for pets. Donations are always welcome.
