UCCS student who died in auto-ped crash has been identified

Posted: Updated:

The El Paso County Coroner's Office has released the ID of a UCCS student who died in an auto-pedestrian crash on Sunday. The accident happened on Austin Bluffs Parkway and Stanton St early Sunday morning.

The coroner identified the victim as 18-year old Zachary S. Schlagel of Windsor. The coroner determined Schlagel died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries suffered during the crash.

CSPD said Schlagel was crossing the eastbound lanes of Austin Bluffs with two other people, when a driver in a pick-up truck hit him and another pedestrian. The second victim suffered minor injuries, the third did not sustain any injuries.

CSPD says this is the 31st traffic-related fatality in Colorado Springs this year, there were 28 at this time last year. Schlagel is the eighth pedestrian fatality this year, as there were seven in 2016.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified but not yet released, however the pick-up truck is in police custody.
