Posted: Updated:

The Cañon City Police Department and Florence Police Department once again teamed up for the annual Drug Take Back event.

Designed to give people the chance to turn over unwanted or expired prescription drugs, officers collected 286 lbs of medications. The drugs will now be destroyed.

If you missed out on the event, there is a permanent drop box in the lobby of the Cañon City Police Department - 161 Justice Center Rd. - available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On a national level, The DEA said it collected 450 tons of drugs during its last take back event in April, and more than 8.1 million pounds of pills during its last 13 take back events around the country.
