Kevin Spacey criticized for timing of coming out as gay

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

Kevin Spacey's statement of regret after being accused of trying to seduce former child actor Anthony Rapp has prompted a backlash.

Spacey apologized for the alleged 31-year-old assault at a party in New York. He then chose to come out of the closet, prompting many to question the timing and accusing the actor of trying to change the subject.

Comedian Wanda Sykes tweeted: "You do not get to choose to hide under the rainbow."

Columnist Dan Savage said that being drunk or closeted does not excuse assaulting a 14-year-old child.

Rapp disclosed the allegations during an interview with BuzzFeed News. He said the incident happened when was 14 and Spacey was 26. Both of them were working on Broadway at the time, and it happened during a party at Spacey's apartment.

Spacey issued a statement Sunday night, saying he did not remember it, and that he might have been drunk at the time. He went on to say, "If I did behave as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been inappropriate drunken behavior."

Spacey's statement then goes on to say he had relationships with both men and women and that he now chooses to live as a gay man.

Some gay rights activists said he also seemed to make a connection between being gay and sexual abuse of minors.
