Colorado College stuns No. 17 New Hampshire 2-1 in overtime

Posted: Updated:

Trevor Gooch scored 1:03 into overtime to give Colorado College a 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten and 17th-ranked New Hampshire Saturday at the Whittemore Center in Durham.

The Tigers (4-2) forced a turnover in the UNH zone and Westin Michaud found Gooch in the slot, who fired a rocket that found the top shelf past Wildcat goalie Danny Tirone. Gooch, who had an assist on CC’s first goal for a two-point game, notched his first goal of the season and first career game-winner.

Colorado College goalie Alex Leclerc was outstanding Saturday, making a season-high 39 saves, including several during two 5-on-3 advantages in the first two periods for New Hampshire.

“Alex had some big saves from the start tonight,” head coach Mike Haviland said. “From the cage out, we were really solid tonight.”

The Tigers were down two men for 1:06 when Michaud was whistled for tripping at the 8:06 mark of the opening period. After killing off the two penalties, freshman Jack Gates scored his first career goal to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead at the 12:40 mark. Just as a UNH penalty expired, Alex Berardinelli sent the puck to the net. Gooch was right in front and pushed the puck to the left side, where Gates had an open net past and beat Tirone.

Colorado College fought off their second 5-on-3 disadvantage early in the second period, but couldn’t get out of the frame unscathed as UNH defenseman Max Gildon scored his fourth goal of the weekend with just 29.8 seconds remaining in the period. Liam Blackburn sent a pass from the right corner to Gildon, who was streaking back door down the left side and he placed a shot inside the near post past Leclerc.

Neither team scored in the third period, although the Tigers came close in the final minute when Christiano Versich hit the post with 30 seconds remaining as Tirone was sprawled on the ground. The Wildcats had a good look early in the overtime frame, but the Tigers thwarted the rush to set up Gooch’s game-winner.

“Our team was upset after last night (a 6-3 loss) and came out prepared and focused tonight,” Haviland said. “I was impressed how we fought back for the second time on the road so far this season.”

The Wildcats outshot Colorado College, 40-24, and Gildon led all players with eight shots. Gooch, Michaud, Versich and Zach Berzolla each had three for the Tigers. Tirone had 22 saves for New Hampshire.

The Tigers open NCHC play next weekend at home against North Dakota, Oct. 27-28, at The Broadmoor World Arena.
