Salt Lake City forms committee to weigh Olympics bid

Posted: Updated:
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -

Salt Lake City is forming an exploratory committee to decide if the city will bid to host another Winter Olympics in either 2026 or 2030.

The group said Monday that it will decide by Feb. 1. The city hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics.

The bidding process for the 2026 Winter Olympics starts next year with hosting rights to be awarded in July 2019. Denver and Reno, Nevada, may also have interest.

The Salt Lake City Games were marred by a bidding scandal that resulted in several International Olympic Committee members losing their positions for taking bribes.

But with the help of Mitt Romney and others, the Olympics were saved and Salt Lake and Park City have stood as prime examples of the sort of legacy that modern Olympics are supposed to leave in a region.
