As required by law, the Cañon City Police Department sent out notice Friday afternoon of a Sexually Violent Predator who has relocated in the city.

William Joseph Drake is a 39-year-old white male, 6' tall, weighing 185 lbs. Drake was convicted of sexual assault on a child in June of 2012.

He's now living at 1015 Harding Avenue, Cañon City.

Along with the notification required by state law, the police department is reminding people that aggressive actions on their part towards a sex offender is against the law.

"Any action taken by you towards a registered sex offender, including vandalism of property, verbal or written threats of harm or physical assault against this person, his or her family or employer can result in your arrest and prosecution. You must contact the Canon City Police Department or Fremont County Sheriff's Office immediately if you believe a crime is being, or will be committed. We encourage the public to have open, honest, communication with their children about this issue."

Parents are advised to use the following guidelines when talking to their children about offenders:

  • Avoid scary details
  • Use language that is honest and age appropriate
  • Teach them not to harass or visit the offender’s home or yard
  • Teach them to tell a safe adult if anyone acts inappropriately towards them (creepy, too friendly, threatening, etc.)
