Man dies in deputy-involved shooting in Las Animas County

Posted: Updated:

A Las Animas County Sheriff's Office Deputy is on leave following the fatal shooting of a suspect who reportedly attacked during an attempt to get him under control.

Neighbors called 911 about a fire in the backyard of a home on the 20500 block of Highway 12 in Valdez just before 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Deputies contacted a man outside the home who was acting suspiciously. A sheriff's office release states the man tried to run from deputies, then attacked as a deputy tried to subdue him, and the man was shot.

The unidentified man in his mid-40's did not survive his injuries. The deputy is on leave, per policy.

Details on whether the man lives in the neighborhood and what was taking place in the backyard are not immediately available.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is assisting Las Animas County with the case.
