Woman dies, child seriously injured in I-25 crash

Posted: Updated:

Troopers with Colorado State Patrol have reopened all lanes of SB I-25 past the S. Academy exit after a fatal crash Tuesday afternoon.

Colorado State Patrol says 28-year old Shara Cardenas of Colorado Springs was killed in the crash. A three year old child was also in the car and was transported to a local hospital for serious injuries.

According to a release from CSP the vehicle was a sedan traveling in the left lane on SB I-25 when the vehicle drifted onto the left shoulder, and the front of the car collided with a metal guardrail.

The driver steered abruptly causing the vehicle to rotate clockwise, where the vehicle then traveled across both southbound lanes and went off the right side of the road. The vehicle then crashed into a grassy hillside causing it to rollover one time before the vehicle came to a rest.

Reports say Shara was unrestrained at the time of the accident but the child was properly restrained in a car seat.

The crash was reported at milemarker 134.5 and caused major traffic delays in the northbound lanes. Traffic on the interstate was detoured onto South Academy Blvd at the exit.

Traffic in the southbound lanes was backed up all the way to the Circle Drive exit.
