Custer County Sheriff's Office investigating possible kidnapping

The Custer County Sheriff's Office is investigating a possible kidnapping involving two teenage boys after a couple took them to Missouri without parent permission.

Deputies said Samuel and Trisha Deatherage were arrested after turning themselves in near Springfield, Mo. on Oct. 2.

The Custer County Sheriff's Office said the Deatherages had 15-year-old and 16-year-old boys help them cut firewood on Sept. 17. Deputies said the boys' parents thought the boys were camping with them and expected them to come back home on Sept. 25.

When they did not return, and the parents reported it to deputies.

Deputies learned that Samuel and Trisha Deatherage traveled to Missouri and brought both of them with them. The Sheriff's Office said attempts to contact the Deatherages were unsuccessful and warrants were issued for second-degree kidnapping

Trisha Deatherage called deputies and said the entire situation was a misunderstanding, they turned themselves into a police department in Missouri. They are awaiting transfer back to Custer County and are charged with second-degree kidnapping.

Deputies said they are "not aware" of the boys experiencing any physical distress or injuries.

As of now, The Missouri Department of Human Services are holding the boys until a legal guardian can pick them up.
