How to prepare your furnace for the cold weather

Posted: Updated:

COLORADO - The cold weather has officially made it's debut, for some that means turning the heat on at home.

But, have you checked your furnace lately? The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency suggests checking the furnace before cold weather arrives.

Experts say residents should change their furnace filters every few months all throughout the year, scheduling regular services and cleanings by licensed professionals.

They also say this can help save lives along with a functioning Carbon Dioxide detector.

Colorado Springs Utilities says, '' It's just something that should be, something you should be doing every single year just to keep your family safe. We've got the holidays approaching, a lot of family in and out of  homes, so it's very important that we get these checked.''

Colorado State University also says if you smell gas, which can smell like rotten eggs to get out of the house, call Colorado Springs Utilities or 911.
