Cold weather could bring early end to chile season, other produce

Posted: Updated:
PUEBLO -

With the cold weather on Monday farmers in Pueblo were trying to pick as many chiles, and other produce, as fast as they could before a hard frost sets in.

Farmers say if this happens in the coming days it will most likely mean the end of chile season.

Workers have already been putting in long hours to pick chiles as there are many still out in fields.

Farmers say they won’t be able to pick all of the chiles. They are doing what they can each day with many working 15 hours.

They say with the large amount of rain in the last couple of weeks everyone is behind.

However, if there is only a light frost farmers can still pick what is underneath the chile plants.

Besides the chiles, farmers also have to start thinking about picking pumpkins because a frost will make them rot much faster.

Farmers say if picking season wraps up soon for both crops businesses will lose out on some money, but thankfully, this chile season has been especially good.

Farmers will be selling chiles for about another month or so. If you still want chiles don’t hesitate to call and ask farmers what’s available.
