Trump links immigration demands to DACA support

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Latest on the Trump administration's immigration proposals (all times local):

10:20 p.m.

President Donald Trump is telling congressional leaders that his hard-line immigration priorities must be enacted in exchange for extending protection from deportation to hundreds of thousands of young immigrants.

Trump's list of demands includes overhauling the country's green-card system, a crackdown on unaccompanied minors entering the country, and building his promised wall along the southern border.

Many are policies Democrats have said explicitly are off the table and threaten to derail ongoing negotiations over legislation protecting young immigrants known as "Dreamers." They had been given a reprieve from deportation and the ability to work legally in the country under President Barack Obama.

The overhaul of the green-card system would limit family-based green cards to spouses and the minor children of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents.

The Trump administration has released a list of hard-line immigration priorities that threaten to derail efforts to protect from deportation hundreds of thousands of young immigrants, many of whom were brought into the U.S. illegally as children.

The demands include overhauling the country's green-card system, hiring 10,000 more immigration officers and building President Donald Trump's promised wall along the southern border. Many are policies Democrats have explicitly said are off the table.

But Trump administration officials say the president will insist on their passage in exchange for supporting legislation that would extend the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA.

The White House legislative affairs director, Marc Shor, says the proposals are essential to mitigate the legal and economic consequences of any grants or status to DACA recipients.

The Trump administration has sent an immigration policy wish-list to Congress that could derail efforts to protect from deportation hundreds of thousands of young immigrants brought into the U.S. illegally as children.

The demands were sent to lawmakers Sunday. The proposals include limiting family-based green cards to spouses and the minor children of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, and creating a point-based system.

The White House also says it wants to boost fees at border crossings, and make it easier to deport gang members and unaccompanied children. Overhauling the asylum system and hiring 10,000 more immigration officers are additional proposals.

It's unclear whether the proposals will be demanded in exchange for supporting legislation to protect young immigrants.

Top congressional Democrats say the list is unreasonable and fails to represent any attempt at compromise.

Colorado is collecting so much money it may be required to send more than $200 million back to taxpayers over the next three years.  It's a surprising turn from this time a year ago, when lawmakers cleared out room under the state revenue cap to avoid budget cuts.
