Oct. 5 marks deadline for DACA renewal

Posted: Updated:

A month ago President Donald Trump made an announcement saying congress has 6 months to come up with a solution to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Oct. 5th is the deadline for DACA recipients who have an upcoming expiration date on the benefits to reapply.

The application itself costs $495 and the benefits exist for 2 years.

The program, which currently serves about 800,000 people in the United States allows children of illegal immigrants to get a driver's license, work, and go to school without the fear of deportation.

With the possibility of the program ending in March- many southern Colorado DACA recipients are doing everything they can to encourage lawmakers to find a solution.

The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act (DREAM) act- originally introduced in 2001 has been reintroduced several times without passing in congress.

After the last announcement of DACA, the DREAM act made another reintroduction, with both Colorado senators Michael Bennet (D) and Cory Gardner (R) backing the act.

The DREAM act is not the only bill currently on the table, there are a handful of others that could possibly present a solution.

The bills include the Bridge Act, the The Recognizing America's Children Act, and The Enlist Act.

The Bridge Act would allow DACA recipients to continue working and have protections for at least 3 years, the bill does not provide a pathway to citizenship.

The Recognizing America's Children Act would allow the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to allow children of illegal immigrants to stay in the U.S. if they've been in the country since 2012 and entered the country when they were younger than 16 years old.

The Enlist Act allows children of illegal immigrants to join the military, the service could eventually lead to permanent resident status.

With the renewal deadline, there will be a few events in southern Colorado including a vigil for DACA at 7:30 p.m  at the Copa Cabana event hall (2410 S Academy Blvd, Colorado Springs, CO 80916.)

Another event in Pueblo will take place starting at 4 p.m. at the Sister Cities Plaza (301 N Union, Pueblo, CO 81003) just outside of Rep. Scott Tipton's office to play a game of "DREAMers Chess".
