Feeding the homeless in Colorado Springs

Posted: Updated:

As winter approaches, there are a few options where homeless people in Colorado Springs can go to find shelter and meals.

The Springs Rescue Mission recently added a fourth meal time for people to come and receive a meal.

Any given night the Rescue Mission sees about 300 people stopping by to eat, during the week the shelter goes through about 4,500 pounds of food.

'It's an astronomical amount, but it just barely meets the need,' said Michael Longo, Director of In-Kind Services with the Springs Rescue Mission.

Longo added they've seen an increase in the number of people coming through the kitchen in  just the last few weeks.

Previously, about 200-220 people came in for meals- it's now consistently been around 300.

The process is a lengthy one, Longo says his staff starts their day around 5 a.m. where they beginning prepping meals.

'We take ingredients that come from the local community and we formulate meals,' said Longo.

The ingredients are donated from people all across Colorado Springs.

For Longo, it's about making people feel welcome and safe, often times he says the people who come in are beyond grateful.

'They come in, they've been beaten by the weather, society, it's a place where they can come and just relax,' said Longo.

The Springs Rescue Mission is also looking for more volunteers and donations.

For food donations, anyone can stop by the kitchen at the rescue mission and drop off what they have.

Volunteers are asked to contact the mission online at the link here.
