For many people, the light-up signs on the Interstate and highways are hard to miss.

The signs operated by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) often display the number of traffic fatalities so far this year.

CDOT data shows the number of people killed in traffic deaths is down from 2016 (data collected on Sept. 18th shows 425 deaths this year, compared to 450 the same time in 2016.)

In Southern Colorado, the data shows a different story- an increase of about 20 deaths from the year before.

For one family in Falcon, their son is just one of hundreds that have died on Colorado roads.

'It's been a lot of depression, upset moments in life, and things that you can't prepare for," said Mason Peters.

Peters lost his stepson, Michael Finley on April 14th to an impaired driver.

Finley, a senior at Falcon High School was just weeks away from graduating when the tragic accident happened.

'You think, that young man's going to be something, and that was taken away by one choice,' said Peters.

Peters says Finley was on the way home the night of the crash, in the 6 months since- the family is still sensitive to the tragedy.

'I'd like everybody in this community to say, enough's enough. There's too many lives that are being effected here,' said Peters.

The other driver in the crash, Michael Fay pleaded guilty to Vehicular Homicide in August. Fay is expected back in court on Oct. 10th.

The data below from CDOT shows the following numbers for traffic deaths in 2016 and 2017.
