Brewery's Beer 4 Boobies event saves lives

MONUMENT -

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and a mammogram event held each year at a local brewery is already credited with helping save one woman's life.

Pikes Peak Brewing in Monument started the event five years ago after one of the owners lost their mother to breast cancer. To raise money, the ladies of the brewery create a special brew each year that they call their "Beer 4 Boobies." This year's brew is a raspberry and oatmeal stout. Money raised benefits the local breast cancer charity Sister's Hope.

As the event has grown, the brewery has added a Mammogram-arama which brings life saving screenings to their customers thanks to the UCHealth Pink Lifesaver Bus.

Toni Nadal is a breast cancer survivor who used to work at the brewery and got her screening that found the cancer at this event.

"It was cured quickly, like I had a lumpectomy and radiation and I then, three years, this is my third year this year since I was diagnosed."

Tasting Room Manager Laura Graham says making it easier to get screened is the whole.

"We try to get as many people in just so there's more women getting mammograms," she said. "It's kind of easier to get a mammogram when it's a little more relaxed atmosphere."

She added that beer or two beforehand adds to that relations. You don't have to be a beer lover to enjoy the event. This year, they added Pinots and Pilates.
