Community turns out to honor Vietnam veteran Roman Belasco

Posted: Updated:

News 5 first introduced you earlier this week to a widow that feared no one would show up to her husband's memorial service. Her husband is a Vietnam veteran who served for 20 years, when the VFW and American Legion found out she needed help with a memorial service they immediately stepped in.

"I know he needed the honor," said Ute on Thursday, "because he did serve his 20 years, he'd been to Vietnam he's been everywhere."

"I knew the veterans would show their support, said Cynthia Galvin with the Cheyenne Mountain VFW, "I wasn't sure how many, I'm very very happy we had such a large turnout."

The memorial was held at the American Legion Post 38 in Fountain. You couldn't find a parking spot and cars lined the road leading to the Legion post. When veteran organizations stepped in to help it was estimated 100 people would show, but there were hundreds of people.

"It was shoulder to shoulder," said Steve Kjonaas, COO of VFW in Colorado, "People right next to each other. Everybody from all the veterans organizations, active duty military, I saw some cadets around here and everybody working together. It was just a wonderful sight."

It was a full military memorial service with presentations from the veteran organizations.

"That's all she really wanted," said Galvin, "She wasn't asking for handouts, she wasn't asking for sympathy, she just wanted her husband to have the proper send-off."

People that couldn't fit in the room for the service filed in to see images of Roman and an even bigger line formed to speak with Ute, the woman who thought no one would show up to a service for her husband.

"We need to support our community," said Kjonaas, "People do come out to events like this because we do have to show support."
