Peterson AFB send airmen and aircraft to eastern Caribbean

Posted: Updated:

COLORADO SPRINGS - The Peterson Air Force Base has assigned troops and aircraft to assist in operations in the eastern Caribbean areas.

According to the Air Force Base two C-130 Hercules aircraft and 18 Reserve Citizen Airmen are assigned to the 302nd Airlift Wing providing airlift in support of disaster relief and humanitarian assistance.

"Our Reservists have made a quick turn to make the shift from aerial firefighting missions in California to disaster relief support," said Col. James DeVere, commander of the 302nd Airlift Wing.

The 302nd Airlift Wing says since their departure the reservists have transported cargo and supplies in support of the movement of the Joint Task Force Leeward Islands' (JTF-LI) base of operations from Puerto Rico to three Caribbean locations.

JTF-LI is the U.S. military task force supporting U.S. foreign disaster relief to St. Martin and Dominica. The task force is made up of Marines, Sailors, Soldiers and Airment.

Fort Carson also deployed troops to assist in disaster relief in Puerto Rico sending roughly 150 soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division. The soldiers brought supplies including bottled water to help more than 3 million without power in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
