September known as tarantula mating season in Colorado

Posted: Updated:

COLORADO - Fall is right around the corner in Colorado, but so is tarantula mating season. The month of September is known as tarantula mating season in a number of states including Colorado.

According to a university study the species present in Southern Colorado migrate from late August through September, that is when they are most often seen. Tarantulas are the largest arachnid in Colorado, species range from light gray-brown to dark reddish brown in color.

Experts say thousands of spiders are searching for mates to reproduce before they die. Adult tarantulas die off in the cold weather, although most of the species die within months.

There are three reported species from Southeastern Colorado, and county records show one species in Southwestern Colorado.
