Officials euthanize elk for attacking two women

Posted: Updated:

ESTES PARK - Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials say they had no choice but to euthanize an elk that injured two women in Estes Park Thursday. Officials told a 9 News reporter they've had their eye on that elk for a while.

A witness captured video of the incident with her phone, and told officials she has been seeing more of this in Estes Park lately. Officials say the elk attacked two women by charging into them on two separate occasions.

The witness told officials one woman had gashes on her upper body although she tried to avoid the elk.  The elk was apparently unprovoked but has been on officials radar for aggressive behavior in the past.

Parks and Wildlife Officials told 9 News both women are out of the hospital and their injuries were non life threatening.
