Pueblo police classify man's death as a homicide

Posted: Updated:
PUEBLO -

Pueblo police investigating the death of a man found September 14th near the Minnequa Park Apartments as a homicide.

Just after 4:00 p.m., officers were responding to a disturbance call when they discovered 64-year-old Isaac Espinoza unresponsive on the south side of the building. Officers tried CPR but were unable to revive him.

Investigators say Espinoza may have been involved in an altercation before his death.

Irene Cruz, a friend of Espinoza's says earlier in the day he came over to her mother's apartment in the complex and appeared to be intoxicated and was carrying a steak knife.

Cruz says she asked him to leave and not long after that she came downstairs and saw him lying outside. Cruz also says she spoke to neighbors who witnessed another man who lives in the complex put Espinoza in a choke hold until he wasn't breathing anymore. None of this has been confirmed by police.

Police said they are interviewing a person of interest, but it's unclear if any charges have been filed.
