Hyperloop One announced the Rocky Mountain Route is among the 10 finalists for a global project to provide extremely fast transportation.

Imagine if you could make the 110-mile trip from Pueblo to Denver not in the normal two hours of travel time, but rather in less than 30 minutes. What sounds like science fiction fantasy is growing closer to reality.

The winning route would make several stops between Pueblo and Cheyenne, and even head out west to Vail. The total length of the project is 360 miles covering 10 urban centers.

Hyperloop One envisions a series of electromagnetically-levitated pods sent through elevated pipeline-like tubes at blistering speeds.

The company provided these estimates on transit time:

  • Denver - Greeley: 64 km, 6 min
  • Denver - Fort Collins: 129 km, 9 min
  • Denver - Vail: 121 km, 9 min
  • Denver - Colorado Springs: 118 km, 9 min
  • Colorado Springs - Pueblo: 65 km, 6 min
  • Total Route Length: 580 km

Officials say it's too early to say how much the system would cost, but did say a big part of the cost would be shared by Hyperloop One. Starting with the selection of finalists, the Colorado Department of Transportation, supported AECOM (a multinational engineering firm) will work with Hyperloop One on a feasibility study.

"We are excited? to partner with Hyperloop One in exploring the next step of feasibility of this innovative technology, potentially transforming how Colorado moves," said Shailen Bhatt, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Transportation. "The Hyperloop technology could directly align with our goals of improving mobility and safety in Colorado, and we have been encouraged by the continued progress the technology is taking."
