Community garden project underway at Penrose Elementary

Posted: Updated:

It might seem like it is a little late in the season to start a garden, but that is not stopping a group of fourth graders in Colorado Springs.

On Wednesday, the students at Penrose Elementary worked to get a former bike rack area ready for planting. It's part of the school's project based learning program.

Last year, the students identified projects that could make the community better and decided to start a garden in front of the school for every to enjoy. Teachers said it is a way for the students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to an outside project.

"It gets the kids really excited about wanting to learn, wanting to collaborate, work together. It's really exciting to see kids, their smiles come on their faces. They really get together and think and they have to be really creative to come up with new and different solutions," said teacher Brian Holcombe.

The kids also got help with a grant from Lowe's and several volunteers and family members.
