Auto shop proposal prompts petition in Monument neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
MONUMENT -

Neighbors at the Monument Meadows Mobile Home Park have observed the same thing over the years.

"Quite a bit of traffic--quite a bit of traffic growth," said Philip Zelones, who has lived in Monument--of and on--for more than 40 years.

It's one of the reasons Zelones signed a petition to block Tri-Lakes Collision Auto Body and Paint from setting up shop on a vacant lot down the road.

"It's really congested down at the corner of Beacon Light and 105.  It's almost impossible during the 'peak hours' to make a left turn there," he added.

The petition was first circulated by the Mobile Home Park's owner--but not all tenants agreed to sign it.

Victoria "Gramz" Marshall says more noise and traffic are inevitable in Monument,

"We have it out here going to the schools, going to Walmart--it's just growing," said Marshall, who has lived in Monument Meadows since 2009.

She tells News5 that she questioned the business proposal at first, but has since come around to the idea of a commercial business moving in nearby.

"I don't think it's going to be that big of a deal for us," she added.  "Someone bought that property.  They have every right to, within legal rights, do what he wants on that property."

The application was already approved by the Monument Planning Board in a 4-3 vote--but the petition is asking the city to take another look at the potential environmental impact of the body shop.

"There's a drainage creek that runs by there.  I guess it's not considered wetlands but it drains right down into what is wetlands--which continues into a creek, which continues into our lake," said Tyson Reese, who also signed the petition.

The ordinance is on Tuesday's agenda at the Board of Trustees  meeting, which is open to the public.

That meeting starts at 6:30 p.m., at Town Hall, in Monument.
