Man hit by train in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS -

A Colorado Springs man is in stable but serious condition according to police after he was struck by a train Saturday night.

It happened at about 10:30 p.m. near South Royer Street and East Las Vegas Street. Officers say the man was hit by a train heading west while he was laying on the tracks.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe train had about 50 cars loaded with coal. The engineer told officers they noticed the man on the tracks and did try to stop, but could not avoid hitting him.

The victim was was trapped under the train before first responders were able to free him. He has not been identified. 

Police have also not said why he was on the tracks.

    Parents are now being allowed to pick up their students from Doherty High School the shelter in place status lifted after a shooting near the campus.
