Air Force Academy helping displaced soccer team from McNeese State University

Posted: Updated:

The effects of Hurricane Harvey are coming to the doorsteps of Colorado Springs.

The McNeese State women's soccer team is scheduled to play the Air Force Academy on Friday night but arrived on Tuesday, four days ahead of their game because of the flooding effects that are beginning to hit Louisiana. McNeese State is located in Lake Charles.

The women haven't attended classes so far because the school is closed for flooding.

Many of the players are from the Houston area and they are trying to focus on a soccer game while also worried about their families and their belongings.

"We are worried about travelling and other people are worried about their homes and their lives," said head coach Drew Fitzgerald. "I think we are just trying to keep it in perspective. That's been our theme that is hasn't been easy for us but it's been a lot harder for some other people."

"I mean this is the most excited we've been to have a ball at our feet in a while," said junior goalkeeper Bri Lovett. "We get out here and see the sun that we havent seen in a while and we feel how beautiful the temperatures are. Under these conditions we feel incredibly blessed to be here and be able to play on this field."

A shortage in construction workers is being felt across the nation and it's hit Colorado Springs hard. While it's no secret the demand is high for housing across the city right now and it's been growing for decades.
