Three questions to ask yourself, if you live with a loved one with debilitating mental illness Three questions to ask yourself, if you live with a loved one with debilitating mental illness
COLORADO SPRINGS -

Mayfield Counseling in Colorado Springs is helping us at News5 keep a focus on reducing the stigma around mental illness, as families and kids adjust to back to school routines.

When it comes to living with a loved one or child who has debilitating mental illness such as anxiety or depression, Stacey Hind a licensed professional counselor with Mayfield Counseling say's it's important to ask yourself 3 questions every day.  The first question you should ask yourself is are you taking proper care of yourself?

Stacey says that question includes, "Am I eating well, am I sleeping too much or too little, am I getting a little bit of exercise every day?”

The second question to ask yourself, is how am I lowering my own level of stress?  “Am I  focusing on an activity every day aside from the chaos in our own world like doing a puzzle  or drawing or writing.

A third question Stacey invites people to ask themselves is, “Am I carrying this burden alone?  Oftentimes we are so focused on meeting the needs of our loved ones, that they are the only ones we notice.  Make sure to reach out to a friend, a family member, or even a counselor."

Stacey also says yoga can be a good mindful activity when it comes to taking care of yourself and reducing your own stress or depression as you care for a loved one can really help you be there for them in meaningful ways.
