Midnight Madness comes to Doherty to start football season

Posted: Updated:
COLORADO SPRINGS -

Every teenager likes to stay up past midnight during the summer, right? Turns out even for football practice.

Doherty High School opened the 2017 football season with their first practice of the fall at 12:01 am Monday morning, the first a school can have practice in Colorado.

"To be the only team in the state - I know it was only for an hour but - that's just one more opportunity to get better tonight," head coach Jeff Krumlauf said.

"I was trying to take a nap before this but I couldn't sleep because I was so excited for this," said Joe Golden, Doherty senior tight end. "This something that I'll remember for the rest of my life. This is a great memory."

The Spartans, the largest high school in Colorado Springs, missed the 5A playoffs in 2016 due to RPI complications and don't expect those to happen this year.
