Vehicle renewal kiosks to be installed in El Paso County

Posted: Updated:
EL PASO COUNTY -

A new service is coming to El Paso County to help streamline the vehicle renewal process. The Clerk and Recorder's Office will soon be opening ATM-style kiosks in two locations. They will be in the Citizen's service center on Garden of the Gods Road and the Union Town Center on Union Blvd.

"I look forward to that happening and giving our customers one more way that they can renew their tags without coming into our office," County Clerk and Recorder Chuck Broerman said, noting that the "DMV in a box" will add to several other out-of-office options, including mail, phone and the internet.

The announcement of the new kiosks came at Tuesday's County Commissioner meeting, but no set date for unveiling them was announced. Broerman said the kiosks will be open 24 hours seven days a week and there is a plan to add two more in the future.

The need for more ways to help customers is evident in the number of people who are registering their vehicles. There are 681,660 motor vehicles registered in El Paso County. Balance that with census data, the county's population was estimated at just over 680,000 last year.

El Paso County is home to the only motor vehicle office in the state that is open on Saturday at the Union Town Center.

"That is something we can hang our hats on in El Paso County," Broerman said of the Saturday service. "We see people from as far away as Grand Junction, Durango and Pueblo."

The office that opened on Fort Carson is also seeing steady traffic, with as many as 250 transactions daily since it's inception in August of last year.
