How Many Days Has It Rained?!

Posted: Updated:

I'm sure most of you have noticed by now, but it's been raining for what feels like a whole year! Well it hasn't been a year... but it's definitely been a lot over the last two months!

Our data gathered was rain reported at the Colorado Springs airport. In July, 8 days out of the 31 days this year it has NOT rained at the airport. A few of those days it rained in the northern part of Colorado Springs but nothing fell at the airport, so the true number of dry days is probably smaller than 8. In August we've only had 1 day where there was no rain, and that was on the 1st of August!

We looked back through our climate records, and while it's normal for July into August to see the most rain of the year in Colorado Springs, this is still wetter than normal. The average July rain for Colorado Springs is 2.84" and this July we saw over 6 inches of rain!

Whats the take away? The big thing is that no this much rain isn't exactly normal even through this is the time of year we see the most rain. There are more pros than cons with this rain. The main pro is our water supply remaining strong, our drought being knocked completely away, and wetter soils helping the lack of wild fires. The cons, repeated heavy rains make flash flooding more frequent which can damage property and threaten lives.

We'll be in fall soon and that rain will go away... until it comes back as snow!
