Jenn Valente wins Stage 1 of women's race, John Murphy wins men's at Colorado Classic

John Murphy won the men's race and captured stage one of the Colorado Classic, Thursday. 

Murphy broke through in the sprints to win the first of four stage race. 

Murphy will lead the pack in stage two in Breckenridge, Friday for stage two.

A cyclist who calls Colorado Springs home has won Stage 1 of the Colorado Classic women's race. Jenn Valente is a California native, but enjoys a home in southern Colorado.

The 22-year-old finished at the front of the pack that made two circuits from downtown Colorado Springs to Garden of the Gods, with a wrap-up of 3 circuits in downtown.

Valente won the silver with Team USA in the 2016 Rio Olympics in the 3000 Meter Team Pursuit event.

Coming in second in today's event is Skylar Schneider, followed by Emma White in third.

There are 4 stages to the Colorado Classic. The first stage through Colorado Springs traverses some of the city's most historic and scenic sights, including Old Colorado City, Garden of the Gods, the historic Old North End and downtown.

The women's competition got underway at 10 a.m. and wrapped up just before noon.
