COLORADO SPRINGS -

Dozens of cyclists from around the world are in Colorado Springs for the Colorado Classic. The course for both men and women will take the competitors over hundreds of miles of our state.

There are 4 stages to the Colorado Classic. The first stage through Colorado Springs traverses some of the city's most historic and scenic sights, including Old Colorado City, Garden of the Gods, the historic Old North End and downtown.

While organizers plan to ride through rough weather there were 2 spots of heavy rain that impacted fans and riders. The main threat came from lightning.

The men's portion started at 1:10 p.m. The competitors will make 6 laps from downtown Colorado Springs to Garden of the Gods. The race is expected to conclude in the 5 p.m. hour.

The men's competition started at 1:10 p.m., wrapping up around 4:45 p.m.

The 150.4km opening stage started and finished in downtown Colorado Springs on a loop that took the peloton up to and through the red rock formations in Garden of the Gods.

Six laps of the loop led to the fast, flat finish in town.

Results:

1st) John Murphy (Horseshoe, NC), of team Holowesko-Citadel

2) Travis McCabe, UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling,

3) Logan Sowen, of Axeon Hagens Berman

--------------------------------------------------------------

The women's competition got underway at 10 a.m. and wrapped up just before noon. It consisted of  2 laps from downtown to Garden of the Gods, followed by 3 circuits of downtown.

Results:

1st) Jenn Valente (She hails from San Diego but lives in Colorado Springs)

2nd) Skylar Schneider

3rd) Emma White

Stage 2 is in Breckenridge on Friday. Stage 3 and 4 are in Denver on Saturday and Sunday.

Be aware of road closures across downtown Colorado Springs and the west side for the race around Garden of the Gods. Click here for a list of blocked streets
